Kanaya ryokan

Category: Travel

09/03/2007

Before climbing mount Fuji, I went to Izu peninsula for a couple days. This time, I had decided not to be cheap and stay only at higher end places than I had done so far (even though Amihari onsen was great!), that is only ryokan above 15000yen (150 dollars) per night. In a ryokan, rooms are Japanese style, with tatami floor. Also, diner and breakfast are usually served in the room, and that's really cool!

Based upon the Lonely planet recommendation, I went to Kanaya ryokan for my first night, in a small countryside town.

The main bath was huge:

One of the private baths:

It feels so nice! Meals were also pretty good. Here's my dinner:

Or course, according to Japanese custom, meals consist in many small dishes.

But there was something about the atmosphere of the room. I don't know what, but I just didn't feel totally comfortable. So I just spent one night there, and then I headed towards Shimoda!

I'm still only starting to sort out my trip, but are you still thinking you will be free weekends during mid-November and December? I'm in Japan Nov 19 - Dec 23. If you'd like to travel a little with me and there are specific weekends you'd like to go places, let me know. I will be trying to do a lot with my friend Laura, but her teaching schedule in December seems rather dense, meaning my weekends are largely free then. I will keep you posted as the trip planning progresses.

Enjoy your travels right now!

Fil

Ps. That seems like quite a meal for one person!

Hey Fil
I can't guarantee I'll be free, it'll mostly depend on how fast I get the hang of the job, but I'd be glad to travel with you if I can. There's a couple things I have to do with friends that haven't been clearly scheduled yet, let's try to fit everything together. I'll introduce you to my friends too!
And yes, keep me posted about the planning thing and ask me if you need any tips. I might be able to tell you what is realistic and what is not.
Thanks, I'm currently in Hokkaido, traveling here is totally awesome!!!...
Cheers
PS: sure it is! And usually it's even bigger!...

By the way, are you planning on buying a Japan rail pass?
